Frequentou o Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, escreveu sobre cinema e publicou contos. Trabalhou com Marcel Carn\u00e9, escreveu para Rossellini e Fellini. Depois de<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Gente del Po<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>e alguns document\u00e1rios de dura\u00e7\u00e3o curta, a sua primeira longa de fic\u00e7\u00e3o,<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Esc\u00e2ndalo de Amor<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>(1950), anunciava j\u00e1 as inova\u00e7\u00f5es que viria a introduzir na hist\u00f3ria do cinema italiano, afastando-se da ortodoxia neo-realista. Nessa d\u00e9cada, alguns j\u00e1 sentiam que era preciso dar um passo em frente, \u201cultrapassar o problema da bicicleta\u201d. E a sua quarta longa,<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>O Grito<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>(1957) foi, como diz Manuel S. Fonseca, \u201cuma respeitosa salva f\u00fanebre em honra do neo-realismo\u201d, onde <strong>Antonioni<\/strong> procurava, citando as suas palavras: \u201colhar para dentro do homem a quem roubaram a bicicleta e ver quais s\u00e3o os seus pensamentos, como se adequam, quanto ficou dentro dele de todas as experi\u00eancias passadas, da guerra, do p\u00f3s-guerra\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seguiu-se a c\u00e9lebre \u201ctrilogia dos sentimentos\u201d, e a colabora\u00e7\u00e3o com Monica Vitti:<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>A Aventura<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>(1960),<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>A Noite<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>(1961) e<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>O Eclipse<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>(1962).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A obra de <strong>Antonioni<\/strong> caracteriza-se por uma impressionante composi\u00e7\u00e3o visual, n\u00e3o raro apresentando um cen\u00e1rio que estabelece uma \u00edntima rela\u00e7\u00e3o com as personagens, reflectindo as suas ang\u00fastias e perturba\u00e7\u00f5es, bem como a aliena\u00e7\u00e3o do indiv\u00edduo na era moderna.
