Exhibition “GUARDAR OS OLHOS NO BOLSO” at Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar showcases the importance of artists’ writings and launches 35th edition of Inland Journal

Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar (AMJP) and Inland Journal are joining forces to present the “GUARDAR OS OLHOS NO BOLSO” exhibition, which highlights the importance of written texts in contemporary art. The exhibition will take place from March 31 to June 18, 2023, at the AMJP in Lisbon, Portugal, and will feature 35 editions of Inland Journal, a publication created by artists André Cepeda and Eduardo Matos.

The exhibition will showcase the 34 previously published editions of Inland Journal and launch its 35th edition with an unpublished text by Júlio Pomar. The show aims to explore the connections between art and the written word and between the contemporary artistic and literary production of Pomar. The exhibition will also feature various performance events.

The exhibition’s title, “GUARDAR OS OLHOS NO BOLSO,” refers to the book “Cegueira dos Pintores” that Pomar wrote in the 1980s. It translates to “Keep Your Eyes in Your Pocket” and suggests that to see beyond appearances and delve into the invisible, one must close their eyes and explore their inner selves.

In addition to showcasing objects and images from various Inland editions, the exhibition will also transform the exhibition space into a place for consultation and reading. The aim is to challenge museum methodologies and rethink models of presentation and representation.

The AMJP and Inland Journal hope that the exhibition will encourage visitors to question, discuss, debate, see, read, feel, and understand the world in new ways. The show also aims to challenge the traditional role of museums, making them a space for the creation and mediation of knowledge, rather than simply for its reception.
