Monitor is thrilled to announce the representation of Portuguese artist Maja Escher and her participation in the upcoming group exhibition MATER at Pavilhão Branco in Lisbon. Curated by João Rolaça and co-produced by Galerias Municipais/EGEAC and cultural association Oficinas do Convento, MATER will feature works by Escher as well as fellow artists Virgínia Fróis and Marta Castelo.
Escher’s artistic practice is marked by a collective and hybrid dimension, incorporating elements such as found objects, drawings, and fieldwork methods to develop her site-specific installations and research-oriented projects. Her work frequently combines materials like clay, canes, rope, and vegetables, creating a dialogue between spirituality and science, magic and technology.
MATER reflects a connection to the values and materials of the Oficinas do Convento association, which has over 26 years of history based in Montemor-o-Novo. The exhibition will highlight the artists’ relationships with landscape and reflect on intimate, corporeal, and symbiotic processes, exploring the nature and culture of the places we inhabit and the importance of water in desertified and constantly changing territories.
The exhibition is set to open on March 23, 2023, at 18:00, and will run until June 11, 2023. Escher’s recent exhibitions include Só Pedimos que Nos Semeiem Na Terra at Monitor Lisbon and QuatroVentos at Galeria OTOCO, both in Lisbon, as well as Ano Zero at the Coimbra Biennale. Visitors to MATER can expect a thought-provoking exploration of the intersection between art, ecology, and community.
